Well, hey y’all. I’m Savannah Mae Carter — born right here in Magnolia Springs, Alabama, on a July afternoon so hot the devil himself took the day off. Mama swears the air conditioner quit the second I came hollerin’ into this world, which, if you ask me, was just the Lord’s way of warnin’ folks I’d bring a little heat with me wherever I go.
I work part-time down at Aunt Jolene’s diner, where the biscuits are fluffy, the gossip’s fresh, and the coffee could strip paint off a tractor. When I’m not refillin’ cups or swattin’ flies, I do hair outta my kitchen. Now, I ain’t licensed or nothin’, but everybody leaves lookin’ better than they came in, and that’s more than you can say for some fancy salon in Mobile.
My car’s a beat-up blue Corolla named Daisy — she’s older than my last three boyfriends put together, and a darn sight more reliable. We’ve been through it all: heartbreaks, hangovers, and that one time a raccoon stowed away in the backseat. I’m still not over that, by the way.
I’ve had my fair share of romance, though most of it belongs in the “what was I thinkin’” category. But I learned my lessons — mostly that if a man calls his mama “Ma’am,” you give him a chance, and if he calls all his exes “crazy,” you run.
Now I ain’t one to brag, but I know what I’m doin’ between the sheets. Ain’t no shy wallflower waitin’ for directions—when I want somethin’, I take it. And Wayne? Bless his heart, he’s happy to let me. I like bein’ on top, settin’ the pace, watchin’ him lose his mind while I work my magic. Ain’t nothin’ better than a man who knows when to shut up and enjoy the ride.
Someday I might do somethin’ big — maybe move to Nashville, maybe start my own salon-slash-bar hybrid (haircuts and highballs, why not?). But for now, I’m happy on my porch swing with a cold glass of tea, laughin’ at my own mistakes and tellin’ stories about ‘em. ‘Cause sugar, if you can’t laugh at yourself, don’t worry — the whole town’ll do it for you.
Many thanks to all the talented VAM creators whose works helped making this piece of art.
