MUZ: Underground Facility — Chapter 1 [First Version]
Welcome to MUZ — MilUnit Zero. This is the first Early Access release of a project I've been working on for a while, and also a bit of an experiment: How far can I push VaM toward feeling like a small interactive game rather than a traditional scene?
Chapter 1 takes place inside Sector A of the MUZ Underground Facility, a hidden military installation somewhere in Panama.
The world outside isn't doing particularly well.
Following the emergence of demonic forces and the creatures that came with them, much of humanity has been forced into hiding. People survive underground, inside abandoned buildings, deep in forests and anywhere else that offers some protection from what now occupies the surface.
Organizations like MilUnit Zero have adapted differently. Instead of simply hiding, MUZ sends people back out.
Exactly who they are, what they are doing, and what goes on beneath the facility is something I'd rather let you discover as the project develops.
CHAPTER 1
This first release is deliberately small. It's primarily an introduction to Sector A, the atmosphere of MUZ, the modified first-person player controller, and the kind of interactive experience I'm trying to build around VaM.
You can walk around the currently accessible parts of the facility, interact with certain objects and computers, and meet the first two characters stationed here.
Hana works around the facility and will probably be one of the friendlier faces you'll encounter down here.
She's sweet, cheerful and genuinely wants to help.
She's also... not exactly the brightest person MUZ has ever employed.
Then there's Dr. Evelyn Voss.
Voss is considerably more intelligent.
Unfortunately, she's also considerably easier to annoy.
She's sharp, impatient, quick-tempered and has very little tolerance for people interfering with her work. She's a scientist first and a people-person somewhere around... eighteenth.
Try not to touch anything.
WHAT'S COMING NEXT
Because this is Early Access, Chapter 1 isn't finished yet.The next update will expand Sector A with another room, alongside the first batch of collectible music discs and hidden audio recordings scattered throughout the facility.
Those will begin opening up more of the world and its history without simply dumping exposition on the player.
Some will be easy to find.
Others won't.
From there, I want to continue expanding the facility piece by piece while introducing new characters, interactions and areas as the story develops.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF VaM PROJECT
The environment has been built specifically for this project, with a lot of attention going into making the facility feel like an actual place rather than simply a backdrop. There's obviously a heavy Metal Gear influence throughout the project, particularly the mixture of military fiction, strange characters, optional information and environmental storytelling.
But MUZ belongs to my own ZlayerZ universe.
So while things might look like a somewhat normal underground military facility right now...
that probably won't last.
This is still an experiment, and I'm learning what works as I build it. Things will change. Systems will be improved. There will probably be bugs and weird VaM moments along the way.
So feedback is extremely welcome.
For now:
Explore Sector A.
Meet the staff.
Don't break anything.
And if Dr. Voss asks...
Hana did it.
Welcome to MUZ.
