Solved Licensing question about Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon & PC

Hi everyone ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡

I’m looking for some clarification regarding licensing and paid content, specifically involving:

From what I understand, both assets are released under CC BY. However, Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon appears to include dependencies that are licensed under CC BY-NC-SA.

This is where I’m getting confused:

  • Does the presence of CC BY-NC-SA dependencies mean that anything using Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon cannot be included in paid content at all?
  • Or is it still allowed as long as those specific NC-SA components are not redistributed directly?
  • How does this affect packaging in VaM, especially since the package builder flags it in the license report?
While checking the dependency usage for Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon on the Hub, I can see that plenty of paid content from other creators references it. That makes me unsure whether I’m misunderstanding the licensing in this specific case, or if there are accepted practices I’m not aware of.

Any insights into this would be really appreciated (˶ ᵔ ̫ ᵔ ˶) ♡

I’m also a bit surprised I couldn’t find a clear thread about this already. Maybe I just missed it, but if there’s an existing discussion I’d really appreciate being pointed to it.

Thanks in advance ♡

Like we said, there's probably some license issues with those loose textures, but the resource has been on the Hub since 2023 so we won't be taking action on them unless one of those creators files a report.

When you package your var, if you don't receive any errors about NC dependency use, you should be fine.
Either they that created those paid scenes/models asked the original creator of the NC license content for permission. I used the in game Hub access to download those and didn't download the additional presets since they are NC. Honestly, I was just as confused about it also.

These types of questions should always be asked of a moderator. The best thing to do is open a support ticket if you're unclear on licensing.

If you use something that has NC dependencies in your PC content, but you remove those NC elements from your work, they become sub-dependencies which are not actually in your scene.
The upload form on the Hub will ignore any sub-dependencies when it scans for license issues.

People who have used Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon in their PC content have either asked the author for permission, or they have removed any included NC dependencies from their scene.

Take KittyMocap's resource for example. They have removed the NC content from the scene, and you can see the Ultimate Layered Makeup dependencies down in the sub-dependency list here:
https://hub.virtamate.com/resources/km471-take-my-sin.64872/dependencies

Of course the best way to handle this is to reach out to the creators of the NC content and ask permission, though that is not always feasible.

Just to make sure I’ve got this right, I only downloaded bill_prime’s Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon and tolborg’s Layered Makeup Masks without any dependencies.

Does that mean everything in the package’s custom folder is practically CC BY?

No. Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon has 3 NC dependencies. https://hub.virtamate.com/resources/ultimate-layered-makeup-addon.29320/dependencies

If you choose makeups that include NC textures, then you cannot use them in Paid content.

We explained this to another creator using the same addon, so we can show you screenshot examples of the NC textures being used:

If you want to use Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon, you must be sure that none of the makeup you choose includes one of these NC licensed textures from MonsterShinkai, SupaRioAmateur, or V.

Additionally, it is unclear whether the other textures in the Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon have been licensed correctly. For now, we do not plan to make any changes to this resource as it has been around for quite a while and is in use by several authors.
However, we are reaching out to the creator of the addon for clarification.

Ideally, the credits should have listed each texture resource used and the specific license of that resource. If any textures were included that were licensed NC, then the whole addon should have been licensed NC. If this was a mistake on our part, we can only apologize to the creators of the textures included.

I think that’s what I’m saying. If those NC dependencies aren’t installed, then it should only be loading the alpha textures that are actually present in the Ultimate Layered Makeup Addon custom folder, not anything from SupaRioAmateur’s Layered Makeups or v.vempire_makeup as per your screenshot example.

For example:

As you can see, all textures are loaded directly from "bill_prime.Ultimate_Layered_Makeup_Addon.5/Custom/...etc"
