Benchmark Result Discussion

Hi!

I tested my new Apple MacBook Air M1 just for fun. This is the slowest M1 Apple rig, 8GB unified ram and 256GB SSD, and one of the world's best selling laptop. OS: MacOS Ventura 13.2.

I was surprised how well it performed with the 10 watts TDP cpu+gpu config without active cooler. The game is totally playable with low settings, and with low demanding scenes. When the game hits the 20 fps bottom, it is forced to keep it. As expected the three person scenes are laggish. There are some glitches, but I don't have any motivation to optimize it under macOS, and to play with settings, because I have a desktop rig with 3080.

Anyone have a chance to benchmark on a rtx 4080 or 4090 laptop yet? That alienware 4080 is looking pretty good...

I'm considering to upgrade my CPU and therefore did some benchmarking to see what I can expect from it.
Currently rocking an i7 9700K (with all core boost limit set to 4,9GHz), 3080TI (FE, stock), and 32GB DDR4 at 3300MHz 15-17-35.

My main use case is VR. I'll have to compare my benchmark results more in depth with others, but I feel like I could gain a couple of dozen percents increase in FPS by upgraing my CPU to e.g. an i5-13600K, 7700X, or maybe the upcoming 7800X3D. Opinions welcome :)
7800X3d, B650 Motherboard and ddr5 6000 cl30 ram. VAM will smile and stand at full "attention" for you. X3d already showing massive gains over 7700x in game benchmark. Looks like it will eat 13900k for breakfast, Lunch and dinner.

Thanks both for the advice! I've settled on an 7700X, 6000 CL30 ram and an ASUS ROG Strix B650E-I mb (I need mini-itx) and will do a new benchmark whenever everything has arrived and is set-up.

I had a hard time deciding what to settle on, but my train of thought can be summarized as follows:

Whilst I think the 13700k performs better than the 7700X in VAM, with AM5 I can upgrade later. AMD looks pretty neat with their previous 1000->3000->5000 path. The 7800X3D performs better than the 7700X and likely the 13700 as well, but its release date is only in April and its release price is too high for my liking.
I could not decide whether to go for performance now or the maybe upgrade later, but then the 7700X dropped in price significantly here, probably due to the impending X3D release. Now it was easier to just get the 7700X now and upgrade again later when the prices for the X3D's have dropped a bit, or maybe even wait out the next gen if the 7700X gives me enough faps per seconds. For sure I want to see benchmarks first.

I'm confident the 7700X will be better than my good ol' 9700K, which I could sell over the weekend to fund half of the 7700X setup (yay). The AM5 upgrade promise also helped me to justify spending an awful lot of money on a new motherboard and having 5nm tech with it's lower (not low!) power draw gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling, even though it performs less than the 13700. Lastly, I saw a nice 7700X benchmark with the same GPU as I have in this thread: its (baseline 3) numbers are good enough for me and I'll be very happy if I'll roughly match them! Fingers crossed!

I also considered the 7900X, but VAM would not be able to make use of the extra cores and I hope to OC the 7700X to match its clockspeed. Better save some money there for the potential upgrade later.

Looking forward to have everything assembled!

New benchmarks with an 7700X at stock speed and DDR5 6000 CL15!

At 1080p, everything got much better vs the 9700K, except for the "Mirror" benchmark.
I'm especially happy with the "Baseline 3" improvement!

At 4k, everything got worse vs the 9700K. I'm not sure how to interpret or explain this result ?‍♂️

For now I'm excited to see how my own scenes will perform with my new setup :).
I'm also in the process over learning to overclock this AMD setup, I only know manual OC and not this PBO thingy. Some first experimentations were promising, but it'll probably take a while before I'll get to a stable configuration I want to settle on 24/7. There will be new benchmarks from me whenever I get there!

Edit: just tried some of my own scenes. Wow, I am so grateful for this advanced EUV lithography technology people have developed, much soft body physics can be had now ?

My system is using DDR4-3200 CL14 memory, which should in theory be roughly 16/14 = 14% faster than the usual cheaper CL16 memory. Also the CPU is undervolted which gave me about 10°C less with some 1-2% more performance in 3DMark. The graphics card is an MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING Z, so slightly overclocked like most third-party cards. It's noteworthy that apparently resolution scale in VR does not make a difference on my machine. The mirror scene seems to lock to 45fps in VR, probably because Oculus forces VSync, so that sub-result may not be useful.

you should try to play vam by desktop mode ... I was with i77700, 32GB ram and gtx1070 when I had oculus rift (cv1 and the so a lot much better rift-s)

Latest VaM 1.22 release

" Fixed issue with benchmarks no longer working. "

I wonder is he talking about this benchmark? Must be?

hi there, I am currently using a Lenovo Legion 7i laptop with i9-12900HX and mobile RTX-3080Ti with 16GB of ram.

Here's the benchmark result. I am looking to upgrade to a desktop setup that can at least keep 90fps for the lap dance scenes that I usually run. I noticed that in those scene I am CPU bottlenecked (one core would run up to 100%) and ends up with 40-60fps with GPU utilization around 80-90%.

The question I have is whether the AMD 3D cache CPU would benefit VAM, or should I target a high CPU clock part to remove the bottleneck. I plan on pairing with a 4090.

Thanks!

CPU bottleneck. Monitor is Samsung 49" Odyssey G95NA DQHD Quantum Mini-LED Gaming Monitor at 240hz. I wish VAM made better use of GPUs as my 4090 and 3090 in the system would crush it.

In general, single thread performance is king. But 5800X3D wasn't bad neither so I'd wait until someone posts some benchmark with a 7950X3D & 4090 so we can compare to a 13900K & 4090 system. This should answer the question within this CPU generations for VaM.

It seems the 7000x3d series vcache makes a drastic difference in Unity vr games. And VAM is a Unity vr game. So it should benefit VAM ALOT!

But VaM isn't your typical Unity VR game, VaM has a lot of physics calculation and the question is: how much does it benefit from the bigger cache?
But it's interesting to see how much of an improvement for the fps the X3D already is in VR, so in the video he's in a 144Hz limit most of the time. Meaning the CPU could even deliver more fps whereas the 7950X was at around 110fps.

But still: in single thread performance the 7950X3D is still slower than a 13900K by around 20%. So that's why we need a benchmark. Where are the early adopters? Give us some results! :D

Looks like everyone here is more reasonable and waiting for the 7800X3d, which AMD knew would be better for gaming while being cheaper. :sneaky:

I doubt going from 7700X to 7800X3D will result in FPS increase, My system run 5800X-RTX3080 combo, and I see no significant difference in performance against others with 5800X3D-RTX3080 system

Hm. Thats weird. Benchmarks on here show otherwise. Post yours please. Remember, only in cpu bottlenecked situations will you see a performance difference. Mainly baseline 3 in this benchmark. In the game, if your cpu doesnt hold back your fps already, a different processor wont make a difference. But when we talk about cpu performance in this benchmark, we are talking about Baseline 3 fps/physics time.

Hey guys so, finally done the benchmark thing, I think it all worked as intended.

System is:

7900X3D
32GB DDR5 6000Mhz (CL30)
RTX 3080 12GB
Windows 11

Nothing over-clocked, all base (only automatic manufacturer's OCs and such)

*Notes: I do use Windows 11, but the benchmark - for some reason - reported that I'm using Windows 10... but it's Windows 11. As far as the X3D vCache thing is concerned I'm pretty sure that VAM does run on the CCD portion of the CPU that does have the 3D vCache; the only way to 'ensure' it is the case (that I know of anyway) is to point to the XBOX Game Bar that VAM runs 'as a game' in the options (which I did check, and applied the change), so it should also represent the performance from the perspective of the X3D line of CPUs. And, finally, I ran at 1440p, it's my native monitor res. I know that for CPU-specific results it's probably preferable to run at 1080p but really, I haven't done anything at 1080p in the past 5 or 6 years at this point. It's all 1440p for me. So do keep in mind that these results also used my GPU 'more' than if it had been a 1080p benchmark.

Cool, thanks for the run. Something is definately way off. All the 5800x3d Benches on here had much faster scores. Have you tried disabling the non-3d ccd in bios. People have seen a 10% uplift from that. Im mulling over going ahead and grabbing the 7950X3d if i can, so that i can test out disabling non3d cores as well as the other way around. If you could do that, it would save me the time and money Lol. And yeah your 3080 is screwing the cpu results at higher resolutions. Even affects Baseline 3 physics time.
