Can anyone explain what the blue-ish and the black/grey-ish textures are? or where the should be applied? they seem to just turn the body part blue or black.

The purpleish blue ones are normal maps, they go in the normal/bump slot on the textures tab, they will effect how light interacts with the surface of the model by adding fine details like raised skin textures, creases, bumps etc. The grey and black ones can be either specular or gloss maps (Darker ones tend to be gloss maps.) They will effect how much light is reflected on certain parts of the body and how smooth that reflection looks.
