What's the "finished" VaM going to be like?

Is there a roadmap or list of planned features or has it been discussed what it will be like when it can be called sort of finished?

I think the biggest question for me is will it always be just a tool to enable others to build content or will there ever be some kind of built in functionality, simple actor AI, basic positions and animations built in to enable sort of sandbox mode to mess around and so on?

I believe this is the roadmap you are looking for. It seems to be legit as far as the updates and plans.

I read at Reddit that this 1.2 is actually about as far as this will go and next step is 2.0 which would be entirely different application. Any truth to this?

I guess what I mean is will this ever be "a game" that you can simply load up and get into the action with few clicks or will the end users always depend on someone making a scene and persons for them?
 
The current version is 1.20.x . I'm currently using 1.19.x That still gives you updates. I'm waiting for version 2.x.x for multicore support. As far as "a game" the newest version comes with user created content built in. There is a lot of free content. From what I can see, most of the paid content eventually becomes free unless it's a paid asset from another site converted for VaM. I'm still new at this aswell. I recently lost internet so i haven't updated my few content to the .var system.

What do you mean 1.19.x still gives you updates? Is it updated separately from 1.20.x? What is the version that comes with built in content?
 
1.19 updates to 1.20, but a new key (for either the teaser, entertainer, or creator versions) is required.

1.20 is the last major update for VaM. The current version is 1.20.1.5, and while another patch or two will be coming along eventually, there will be no 1.21, so no new key will ever be needed.

Work now has shifted to Vam 2. This isn't an update to 1.20. It's a whole new and totally separate program. NONE of the content used by vam 1.x (except maybe assetbundles? Not sure about that) will be usable in Vam2. Everybody will be starting from scratch, and the first version will have very few features. As with Vam1.x, new capabilities will be added over the next few years.

A lot of people seem to think that when they fire up Vam2.0 for the first time, it's going to have all the capabilities on VaM1.x, but with nicer models and better performance. They are going to be very disappointed. Yes, it will look and perform better than 1.x, but 2.0.0 isn't likely to do more than let you play with morphs and pose models.

So even after 2.0 comes out, people will be using 1.20 for a long time to come. It's worth getting the key.
 
Ok, I see. So the "coming soon" hub browser and quick scene builder in the VaM 1.20.x menu are actually not coming anytime soon and ready made scenes are going to be the only content for quite some time?

2.0 is also going to be more like a builder and less like a game?

I tried VaMX but it had so many problems with person alignment etc.

Thanks for the answer, but what would be the selling point for VAM 2 if we have to trade all our Vars and Vacs? Better graphics means better Headset and better performance means better PC. I already spent 2k to play games like VAM don't think ill jump on VAM 2 if its harder to run TBH.
 
The hub browser has been added. It's the best way to add content to the game, as it doesn't require any manual moving of files. You can access it from the toolbar.
The scene builder plan was scrapped, is it seemed a better idea to put that time into getting 2.0 out sooner.

Philosophically, VaM 2 will be very similar to 1.x. A sandbox designed for content creation more than a game as such.

Vam is limited by design decisions that were made early on in development, 5 or 6 years back. The technology has come a long way since then. by rebuilding vam from scratch with new model types, a new, more modern physics system, etc, scenes will look better and run faster. The biggest performance bottleneck VaM has is that all the character physics needs to run on a single thread in the CPU. Vam 2 does away with this bottleneck, so whatever your computer, 2.x will run better than 1.x does.
 
I haven't paid for the 1.20.x version of VaM.....yet so I'm stuck there for now with 1.19.x. VaM thankfully doesn't auto update. There are .vars i have that the version i have, i can't seem to find in the loading section.

updating to 1.20.1.5 beta didn't delete my .vars, he's talking about VaM #2 not supporting our current files.

I get that about VaM #2. I was answering a different reply and forgot to quote them. On your reply, I don't want to lose the creator key updating from 1.19.x to 1.20.5 beta and then not able to create stuff.
 
Is there ever going to be a "game" in VaM or will it always be more like poser of the old days or engine to build stuff on? Will it ever be something that is sold to regular users as something they can get something out of?

What is the supposed end user experince going to be like when it's finished? Can 3rd party developers sell entire games with VaM simply as licenced engine?

I just wonder if I'm in a wrong train. Some stuff I've tried with VaM looks great but any customization or interaction with pre made scenes just leads to mess.

VR is a tiny niche of the gaming market, and sex games are a tiny niche of the VR gaming market. There just isn't enough money in it to support or justify a large group of people putting in the serious work required to develop a real game.

So the choice right now is between games like VR Kanojo, which is polished and user friendly but has a tiny amount of content, or large sprawling games such as Vam, which offers a huge range of features, all of which just barely work.

AAA video games have budgets in the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. I don't know if the world will ever get to a point where it makes economic sense to build a AAA sex game. But it's certain that it won't happen any time soon.

Simple positioning, basic animations adapting to different angles, body sizes, positions and so on, simple walk around and do as you're told AI. With VaM level visuals and customization.

As I said, Vamx makes an attempt at that and I really respect the work put into it but sadly it too soon turned out to be another mess of clipping, non penetrating, physics twisting frustration when interfacing and adjusting models a little too much...

Manage your expectations, a few years ago we did not even have VR, VaM has taken porn to another level and even it has limitations. Old games built on old engines sometimes need a hard reset to become "next gen", it's the same reason Diablo has a Diablo2 and Diablo 3 ect. VaM 2.0 has to be done for optimization VaM 1.0 runs like crap after your third person and that cannot be fixed with a patch.
 
I do like the fact that you don't have to create pornography with VaM.

Am not gonna lie, I do love the sex stuff, and that is what first made me look at it, but I feel the potential for this program/sandbox could actually be staggering.

To the point that I feel that a PG version should also be considered, one for combat scenes, for dance videos, for film makers, artists, story-tellers.

Let's face it, most of us won't exactly be spreading the word of VAM to workmates, friends, family!

Programs like poser sell for a fortune, yes DAZ is free but they make a packet from content creators, something I am sure a PG/non-adult version of VAM has the potential for.

Boneworks did well as an 'ok game, but amazing sandbox', I am not saying a combat system needs to be put in place, but i am sure a wider audience would attract way more content creators, clothes, poses and scenes would proliferate exponentially, and some of that lovely revenue could come back to the true VAM XD
 
I agree with Booyakshaka: I use VaM mostly for modelling for drawing. I moved here from Daz because VaM allows me to place one model's hand on another models' shoulder and both models REACT... the hand doesn't pass through, and the shoulder bounces slightly. More importantly, hair falls on chairs and beds and floors, bodies react to one another. It's even useful to use "autokissing alignment"... This makes any kind of scene posing SO much more realistic, less stiff and unnatural.

As an artist, I really don't need a PG version. I have had naked Daz models in scenes forever and anyone watching my workflow is pretty well adjusted to nudity. But I'd love it if the Desktop version got as much love as the VR version. This IS a step up from using Daz for me and I'm looking at this as a VERY useful tool.

Oh for sure, but the question really is, would a non-sex focused version marketed not as a sex experience but a creative experience lead to greater pools of user-generated content that would be viable on both versions?

There is a difference to how VAM and DAZ are presented, DAZ is basically 'This is a package for creative artists in every field... and uh... don't tell anyone but it can be used for some sex stuff' whereas VAM is 'This is a sex game, and uh... don't tell anyone but it can be used as a package for creative artists in every field...'
