A few months ago I did some extensive testing of VaM on different Linux distros. I guess I will post my findings here.
I was testing specifically for distros that are tailored towards gaming on an Nvidia GPU, so I skipped out on many options that people might normally pick.
Although I did actually record FPS benchmarks on each of these distros, the differences between them were very small. Anything that stood out, I put in the notes. It is worth noting that there was at least a 10% drop in performance when moving from Windows 10 to any Linux distro, and my guess would be that DXVK (DirectX to Vulkan) is the culprit. (Crossing my fingers that VaM2 might get native Vulkan support.) However, the drop in performance seemed almost negligible in desktop mode. I will need to do more testing in VR to see if there is a significant difference there. I did do several tests with different Wine runners, but ultimately went with the latest Proton build in all of these because it was the most consistent.

-Bazzite (Fedora): I tested desktop and VR. Bazzite with Lutris gave me the best performance in Desktop Mode of any distro. (This may have been because Lutris comes pre-installed and pre-configured with ProtonPlus). I also tested desktop mode in Steam and Bottles, which had basically identical performance. SteamVR would not detect my Valve Index, which was very confusing to me! I spent a bit of time trying to troubleshoot this with no success. However, wifi streaming to the Quest 3 with ALVR worked fine. VaM must be run inside Steam's proton layer in order for SteamVR to detect it, so Lutris and Bottles were not options for VR. I have really enjoyed my time in Bazzite. Fedora KDE Plasma has an excellent interface, and most of the games I have tested have worked great.

-Nobara (Fedora): The guy who designed Nobara was involved in the creation of Steam's Proton, so I thought I'd give it a try. There are very few differences between Nobara and Bazzite, the biggest being the fact that Bazzite is immutable, and Nobara is not. VaM performance was pretty much identical between the two, except the aformentioned boost to Bazzite's natively installed Lutris. Running in Bottles and Steam were pretty much the same experience as before. If you don't like the idea of having an immutable OS, maybe this beats Bazzite in that way. I did not do any VR testing.

-CachyOS (Arch): Since Arch Linux is what SteamOS is also built on, I figured I would give Cachy a try to see if there was any noticeable difference. Surprisingly, there was a bit of a boost to CPU performance specifically (about 10%). GPU performance was about the same as the others. Lutris, Bottles, and Steam all had the same FPS. One thing that did drive me crazy about Cachy was how difficult it was to get NTFS drives working on it, so dual-booting was definitely more of a challenge. KDE Plasma was available as a desktop environment, and it was easy to install, so that was nice. I did not do any VR testing.

-POP!_OS (Ubuntu): This gave me slightly lower performance than the other distros, running through Lutris, Bottles, and Steam (probably 2-5% slower), but everything ran fine. Even though you can technically install other desktop environments for PopOS, it's not very easy to make it the default. I personally did not care for their custom Gnome desktop, but that's just a personal choice. Overall it was fine. I did not do any VR testing.

-Mint: Cinnamon (Ubutnu): Mint gave me terrible game performance with an Nvidia GPU. I may be mistunderstanding why, but I think it's because it is still using older X11 protocols instead of Wayland? I think you can change this manually, if you know what you are doing. Whatever the case, VaM was a slideshow in all of my tests. I have not tried an AMD GPU to see if it was any different.

These are just my findings so far; nothing very complex, but I did find it encouraging to see that VaM ran fairly well in all of them. I have decided to move forward with Bazzite for the time being and see if it does well long-term for editing VaM scenes. Hopefully I will have more to share when I do more VR testing.
 
I've not been using VAM as much as I did before, but something annoying I've come across with VAM (desktop mode) on Arch using Faugus Launcher is that I get crashes rather often and I've not yet found a reason for it.

On the Unity log, this sentence for example comes up often:

Distro: Bazzite

I run VAM with Lutris and WivRN VR. Avoiding SteamVR has given some extra performance headroom, so WivRN is worth checking out for that alone. ALVR works too, but the extra performance is more desirable.
 
WiVRn works well for me performance and stability-wise but I cannot convince it to recognize my Quest 3 controllers as such, it seems to default to Steam controllers and then things like changing movement orientation don't work. But I think I had a similar issue on Windows when using SteamVR until I switched to Vitual Desktop streamer.
Does anyone have any hints there?

Edit: Turns out I can just edit bindings_oculus_touch.json to fix this.

do you use the latest version of proton or did you follow that old guide and use proton 8.0.4?
 
seems to run well for me via Proton, with one caveat - i think operations such as launching the game, loading assets/plugins and closing the game take considerably longer compared to windows. the game is running off of the same nvme drive on both systems.
is there something that can be tweaked to make it load things faster?

I don't have any difference, at least any noticeable, from loading in Windows or linux. Perhpas you use some plugin to help on that and it doesn't work in linux?

the only such thing that comes to mind in my collection is BrowserAssist with var management enabled...
 
My new fav. download more RAM Linux magic trick after upgrading to AM5, but being unable to afford more than 16 GB DDR5:

Microslop can f*ck off. Never switching back.
Meanwhile I'm waiting for Zen 6 and EXPO 1.2 CUDIMMs to flip the current temporary CPU and RAM. Zen 6 => all in move!
 
Here's more about VR on linux:

On my side, I decided it was time to ditch my VR use of Windows and give VR on linux a chance. I'm very impressed and it's great to be once again Windows-free.

Somebody would have to point a gun at me to force me back to use Windows again.
Meanwhile tested out other Distros - Had Bazzite on another drive temporary - very nice for a pure "I just want to game" setup - but not for me with the immutable kernel.

A few month ago I managed to set up VaM 1 as a Unity Editor 2018 project under Linux Mint.
Can not recommend! This was very hard and took a loooooooong time.
It was basically impossible without good AI help and custom written tools to get it running.
For example a problem I did run into:
On Window that would be much easier, because VaM was very obviously developed under Windows where paths are not case sensive.
I had to normalize all Asset/Resource paths for the entire VaM project - otherwise the Unity Editor would become confused and retrigger a multiple hour long asset import.

so im back and got into cachyos. i kinda like it more than endeavouros though this being my 2nd distro its pretty cool exploring linux more and more. now here i am following you guys's methods and settings and i can load VAM to the starting screen thru steam + WiVRn + Quest 3. problem im having right now? loading a scene with just one character works fine most of the time ( their hair randomly disappears sometimes). but loading a scene with poses and animations (damar for example) laggy hell. switching between monitors (pc/headset) has the same horrible fps drops and you can see my monitors on both sides (used 'nvidia-smi' in the terminal). i had the graphics set to ultra low as shown and its still terrible with the frames and the load on my gpu. kind of a issue not just with VAM but some aspects of using my desktop in cachyos be it steam itself is laggy in all pages and discords streams would crash often, forgot to mention i went with GNOME/xwayland. idk how to switch from gnome or wayland but apparently lotta games and apps have issues with em from what i read but i was still having the same issue with VAM before i switched from endeavourOS.

If you say you have issues outside of VAM it's best to fix that first or else it's just going to compound with VAM.

I'm on KDE with Wayland using the proprietary nvidia-open driver. I'm not using CachyOS, but that's Arch-based and I'm on Arch, so I think things will be very similar between them. My experience with the OS and VAM on it is a lot smoother than yours, and what I suggest is to check the Arch wiki too, besides Cachy's wiki, and perhaps try KDE on Wayland:

so i went and reinstalled cachyos with plasma this time, holy fuck its night and day. i loaded vam like usual with the same scene, putting it on high graphics im crushing roughly 30 fps in vr
 
I just realized that when playing an mp4 video in VAM, the imagepanel atom only shows colored bands like this:

Has anyone tried playing a video inside VAM? (in linux of course)

Update:
Turns out Proton-EM works for me both in desktop and VR, as well as having video, so bye UMU and hello EM :cool:
