How to: open .var files in explorer - Quick regedit to add .var to open like a .zip

Credit where credit is due: some random forum post here.

  1. Open regedit: ctrl+r and search regedit
  2. Find the right file: on my computer it's
    Code:
    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip
but you can ctrl+f and search ".zip" and it should pop up
  3. Export the file: File > Export and save it wherever
  4. Open and edit: Open...

Some people are not comfortable editing the Windows registry. There are a few other ways to do this.

If you have 7zip installed (it's free), then if you right click on a .var file, you will always have the option 7zip -> Open archive.

You can also right click on a var file and do Open with -> More apps -> Look for another app on this PC (way at the bottom), then go to the actual location of the program and select it. If the box Always use this app to open .var files is checked, then this does exactly the same as editing the registry. 7zip's default location is C:\Program Files\7zip\7zFM.exe.

I didn't need to edit the regedit. It just opens fine with the software - Total Commander (https://www.ghisler.com). I can copy image from var file from first panel, open in second panel, then edit and paste back in from second panel to first panel, replacing it.
