Hey, does anyone know a good guide or can share some tips how to create a scene where the lighting comes from the top/back so that the model used is partially hidden (e.g. face) and you can only see outlines?

So far my attempts are fairly unsuccessful because the light always seems to "reach around" too far.

Sounds like you got your global illumination / sky setup not matched to the rest of your lights. You could give SkyMagic a try, which allows you to take 360 screenshot of your scene background (for that temporarily disable characters and foreground objects) and use that as input for VaM's global illumination.
It's part of the "Essentials" suite, you also find a tutorial among my Hub resources. Somewhat cumbersome to use, you have to go via Unity Editor and reimport back into VaM, but the result is usually worth it.
