Hello so ...

"Diminishing returns on VAM aka the more I use it the slowerit gets :("

What do i mean by this clickbaity title? I started using VAM this year and its great. All is good and a steep learning slope but worth it. A great community of creators and users all on a brilliant hub! All good!

But...

The more I use VAM the worse it becomes.

I download about 50% of the free stuff and am a patreon to some haha
I review as much as i can in desktop and then VR and give credit where i can. I delete and or hide for later deletion all the stuff which isnt worth keeping or simply isnt to my liking or offers nothing new to my skillset. But still I end up with 100s of quality vars.
And the more VARS I add the slower VAM becomes. And I know this is true as I have a clean install which zips along with no issues.
And this isnt about just spanking some monkey as a pornaholic haha I keep vars and clothes and plugins which i will use as a creator and i can learn from etc.

I'm not sure if there is a cap or at 1000 vars VAMS craps out but I know with a 150 gig vam folder its having a hard time even on a SSD.

I do put all my vars in separate folders
eg C&G studios is a folder in the addonpackages and in there i keep there vars as a patreon.
Dependencies will be in their own folder eg Acidbubbles etc.

I do this as it makes my life so much easier for quick ref and organization but I wonder if it slows VAM down...?

Im new to VAM this year but others have been doing this longer:

How do you deal with all your vars?
Has your system and scene browser slowed to a grind and is VAM now slower to load etc?
And if so have you solved any of these issues beyond deleting it all or fresh installs etc.

thanks :-D

The best thing I can suggest is to upgrade to an SSD. The difference is night and day because of the read times the larger it gets.

A realistic comparison is an SSD is 20-100 times faster than an HDD

And remove all the bullshit from some creators that is just to bad to use. Also there should be a system that controlle’s the quality in my opinion the way it is now is pretty bad ( and I am not saying my stuff was good ) I just wanna make a point.

I've watched the task manager a few times while loading/changing scenes and it seems like things aren't consistently being cleared from memory. The memory used by VaM will rapidly increase as each scene is loaded (understandably), but that value tends not to go back down when the scene is changed and items from the previous scene are not needed anymore.

Hi,
yes, VaM is getting slower with adding custom stuff. The more you add, the slower it gets up to a certain point. That is a somewhat known fact and an official statement.
So I am with all that stuff for several years, my VaM installation is pretty slow since that time and I don't even know how fast it is when freshly installed. LOL.

It is definitely better than in the early days of VaM due to many fixes, but still not the fastest program (and there are still some memory issues as well). But saying this, there are other great games I have that are pretty slow right from the start and while using, so I don't see IMHO that a slow VaM installation is slower than those or even unplayable.

I don't want to say "go ahead and life with this issues". There are some few things that you can do:
Going from a HDD to SSD was very helpful to me. Sorting VARs to subfolders shouldn't add noticeable loading time, It is officially something you can do. You could even unpack those VAR to a subfolder with the same name, to speed up unpacking in runtime for a (very) small ammount. For a faster loading menu, try to organize your personal stuff in subfolders right from the start. The more preview thumbnails it has to load at one time, the slower the menue is! You can maybe play around with the VaM caching, or you can optimize your downloaded content in size (if you have lots of time to spare).

But the most efficient methode of all is (i know it is nothing we want to hear) keeping your downloaded stuff folders within a reasonable size.
You are not forced to delete all that stuff, but you should maybe do a spring cleaning from time to time and move your stuff to a spare drive. If you maybe miss something, you can still search and copy it to the VaM folder again.

Saying this, being a lazy person I don't do this myselve... therefore my VaM is slow and I try to not care about that (with more or less success). ;)
