Using clothing that isn't worn by a person

I'm trying to see if there's a way I can use clothing as a standalone object that can be moved with the transform handles like a custom unity asset or something. Is there a way to make this possible? Or maybe if it requires a person, is there a way you can control the clothes and move them around and just hide the person?

I haven't tried this, but what i would do is create a scene where a person is wearing the clothing item. Then, using triggers and animation, move a clothgrabsphere to the clothing, enable "undress", turn on the clothgrabsphere, turn off collision for the person, and drag the clothing away.

Now you have a piece of clothing hanging from the clothgrabsphere and can do whatever you want with it.
