I just discovered that you can add actions under the Head Audio that track perfectly with the sounds. I can't for the life of me figure out how to (a) save a set of actions to a person so that they load when I change appearances (that's probably not possible), or (b) how to add them using a trigger. I'd like to be able to control this in creative ways, and so far it looks like I can only add them manually.

Can anyone help me?

Not possible when changing appearances : )
Not possible to add them using a trigger UNLESS you do it the sneaky way: by loading a preset with these actions.

Problem is: it's a general preset, and for it to restore the actions you need to have physical, pose and appearance checked. So it restore the whole character too. You'd need to load a general preset THEN your character.

Thanks, @hazmhox -- that was the conclusion I was coming too, and I loathe the 'sneaky' way because it just breaks everything.

Is there a way to write code to expose these settings? I am not knowledgeable enough to do it myself, but I know a little.

Nope. There's a couple of ways to work around it. But Meshed prevented direct authoring of presets to avoid malicious coder to take on control over the scene. You can "fake" a preset load with a manual trigger written in json, that's what I do in my recent plugins like Studio Maestro.
