I was originally going to post a request for help, but I think I solved my problem. So I'm posting this here in case this helps someone else.
I needed help to get rid of UI panels which float above my controllers in VR. (attached img from the web shows what the panels look like). These appeared after I installed the Leap Motion controller (with latest Gemini SW). As you can imagine, they are very intrusive and I wanted them gone.
I looked through various xml configs and did not find any settings for disabling them. Fortunately, I found the asset directory which contained the PNGs. I changed the transparency down to 2%, but this did nothing. So out of desperation, I just renamed the directory so that it was not available to the Leap drivers. Lo and behold, the panels were banished. Problem solved.
The asset directory is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\drivers\leap\resources\textures
I renamed it to textures.orig. Now the PNG assets are no longer visible to Steam or Leap
