Question Does the CC BY license cover using the resource OUTSIDE of VAM?

Like an idiot when I uploaded my first scenes years ago, I just picked the most accommodating license because I didn't mind if people use it to remix or build upon etc.

But I've noticed recently some people are recording the scenes and putting them on other sites (VRPorn specifically). I know I can't stop them all, but I'm not particularly thrilled with it. The scenes do credit me in the descriptions (and the other dependencies) But I think if I understood that was an option I would have put a more restrictive license on it. I've read through the guide but it only references resources.

Like I said, I'm sure I can't find all the places the scenes have been uploaded, and ultimately it probably doesn't matter. But is the intention for the CC BY license that the resource can be used anywhere even outside of VAM?

A CC license applies to the use of the resource, be it the VAM scene, a recording or pictures of the scene, or anything else in the VAR.

As CC BY all they need is to credit you, which it seems they are, so they're following the license terms you chose. Why the problem with this?

Just based on the description in the guide it seems like it was specific to VAM. It doesn't sound like it's available to use outside of being a resource for VAM.

  • What it means for VaM: You can modify CC BY content and/or include CC BY content as a dependency or packaged in the custom folder of your resource, but you must give credit to the original author with both a link to their profile (or website) and a link to the original content. Adding the content as a dependency in your scene will allow Hub systems to automatically generate the required credit links if the content is available on the Hub. CC BY content can be used in both FREE and PAID resources. An example would be using a Hub CC BY resource as a dependency, or porting a "CC Attribution" asset from Sketchfab.
The problem is, I guess, that I thought I was contributing to the VAM community...not other VR sites.

Creative Commons licenses (CC), or any general purpose licenses, are not specific to a platform.
Your interpretation of how CC licenses work was incorrect, as you can see the reference to Sketchfab, where CC licenses are also used, and surely you have seen at some point photograph captions, they use CC licenses extensively.

Considering that the persons uploading videos are crediting you by the CC BY license terms, you are not being harmed, in fact, they are advertising your works for free, I don't remember where and how I first noticed VAM, could have been from some picture or video shared somewhere. I have no doubt new people will become aware of VAM by way of VR videos like the ones recorded from your scenes, and if they liked the videos from your scenes they are likely to want your scenes too, You are more likely to get new patrons by having this free advertising, so instead of being pissed about something you agreed to - by mistake but still did - perhaps try to see how this can benefit you.

Well I'm not pissed. I'm just surprised and caught off guard seeing my scenes elsewhere (they are credited, but VAM isn't just my name. Someone would have to search and figure out how to find VAM). And i don't know why I would be an expert on how creative licenses work. I figured based on the wording in the guide that it would only be for other resources. I suppose the wording in the guide needs to be updated to make this clearer.

I guess now that I understand this I should just make videos of my own scenes for VR sites.

The line "What it means for VaM" is an indicator that CC licenses are common licenses (it's in the name). To make things clearer for creators, we help define how things work in our community. Ultimately, the responsibility is on the creator to understand the licensing.

I have added a link to the Creative Commons homepage to the guide.

If the credit is "VAM" and not something identifiable as you, say your username from here or patreon, then they are not crediting the creator and you have the right to claim an infrigement of the license.

You are responsible for what you upload. This is the same everywhere for everything.

This is a legitimate income option if you're up for it. Some creators here like CuddleMocap, KittyMocap, SplineVR, and others do that with their scenes. Potentially you can do with any scene as long as the license allows it.
Keep in mind that if you go that route, same as here, you have to pay attention to all licenses of the resources in use.

I understand now. Thank you both for the clarification. Lesson learned!

To ease your understandable pain a little bit: i am one of the guys sawing a video created in VAM which got me hooked. Spent hundreds of cash in the last months for several creators on patreon. As the video wasn't crediting the original author (shame on them), i was still able to find him a month later and could finally pay him for his great work. Subscribed to you a minute ago, keep up the good work.
