VAM Animation Basics Tutorial Video

Guides VAM Animation Basics Tutorial Video

Motion Capture animation is an under-used but incredibly powerful feature of VAM. Maybe people think it is difficult to use? It really isn’t rocket surgery, you don’t need special equipment to make nice scenes. Just a basic VR headset and controllers will get you pretty much anywhere. Once you know a few basic tricks animating in VAM is fun and rewarding, you can create pretty much any sex scene you can imagine.

This video covers the basics of creating animated looped scenes with nothing more than the built in VAM animation system, I will create a complete animated scene in under 10 minutes.

Once you’ve created your first scene here are some additional things I haven’t covered in the video that you might find useful.

Animation Smoothing

No matter how careful you are, small jitters will creep into your animation so to keep it looking as realistic as possible you should smooth the final animation. There are 2 main approaches, GargChow’s SmoothMooves plugin or AcidBubble’s Timeline. SmoothMooves is old but easy to use and still works well, I will cover it briefly to get you started as it doesn’t have the steep learning curve of Timeline.

  • SmoothMooves

Load SmoothMooves plugin on the person and run it, the default settings are good enough to make almost any animations nice and glitch free.

One caveat is that smoothing can make fast animation movements more muted, so you might want to smooth different nodes at different levels depending on what they are doing. You can do this with the Time Span setting. The default is 0.25 but if a node like a hand or hip moves very fast I recommend setting this lower to 0.10 or even 0.05. It will give less smoothing but keep more detail. Some other body parts especially the head look weird if they have jittery movement so I recommend a higher setting like 0.30 to make it nice and smooth. Download SmoothMooves here:
  • AcidBubble’s Timeline

As of the time of writing all of my released scenes have been done using SmoothMoves, but Timeline has opened up a new world of possibilities. It will import your VAM motion captured animations and smooth them automatically, but it will also allow you to chain animations together in sequences. As noted in the tutorial video you should never start a scene with the guys dick inserted, so until now for an animation to be reliable you always had to start and end the loop with the guys dick outside and insert it at each loop. Now with timeline you can start with the insertion then carry on with the rest of the scene without having to take it out again.

For motion smoothing in Timeline I’ll briefly cover some settings to note, but you’ll need to watch some Timeline tutorials to use it properly. Load the Timeline plugin on a person, in it select the More - Mocap Import button to import your VAM animation into Timeline. The control nodes you used for your animation will be added for you automatically.

The Minimum Distance Between Frames setting is the main one that controls how much an imported animation is smoothed. Increase it to smooth more at the expense of animation detail, or decrease it to keep the details at the expense of less smoothing. I find the default of 0.04 loses a bit too much detail in most circumstances so I usually import with this set to around 0.02. If your animation is mainly rotating a node you want to lower the Minimum rotation Between Frames slider otherwise a lot of detail will be lost. There is a lot to learn in Timeline so play with it and see what works for you.

I hope this helps, any questions let me know!

Been meaning to say thanks for this for some time now. This helped me understand the "in-game" animation tool, and honestly, it works really well, especially for simple movements (head, arms, chest) and is way easier than timeline. You are the original scene master from the days before the hub, thanks again.
