WHY?
I got fed up with endless loading times and the utter lack of available sorting options for my .var library.
Not only is my VaM instance running at a low framerate, everything is loading slow as hell.
Unlike most other .var management programs, this.var manager is non-intrusive, meaning it does not make any changes to the actual .var files (except for their location).
It uses symlinks to activate selected .var's and moves everything that is not active out of VaM’s .var directory, which significantly reduces load times.
It’s designed to be as simple as possible while still providing as many important features as possible.
UnknownPeasant's .var Manager v0.12 (alpha)
This is a MAUI application that you run completely separate from your VaM installation, allowing you to manage your .var library more efficiently.
Designed with vast amounts of .var files in mind, this tool helps you get a better experience out of your huge content libraries.

Disclaimer:
This is the first release of my Manager and there may be bugs. I take no responsibility if this tool damages or destroys your files. Use it at your own risk!
Alpha/Beta.
While the Manager is in alpha/beta, it will be available for free so everyone can try it out and provide feedback for improvements, please do so by sending me a message here or over at Patreon. If you get it during the alpha/beta phase, you are free to keep that version forever.
To avoid misleading anyone: later on, after the alpha/beta testing, the Manager will probably be available in two versions, one free and one paid where the paid version will include some additional premium features.

Before you run the Manager, make a full backup of your Virt-a-Mate installation, just to be safe.
How to run it
- Unzip the attached folder and place it anywhere you like.
- Inside the folder, there is a file called VarManager.exe – this launches the program. (se image)
- The first time you run it, you need to create a new instance:
- Click on “Create new”.
- Fill in the paths:
- VaM path: This is the path to your VaM installation (the folder where your VaM.exe is located).
- Storage path: This is the path where you want the .var files to be stored.
- This must not be inside your AddonPackages folder.
- Ideally, it should be on the same drive as your VaM installation.
- Even better if it’s a subfolder of your VaM installation.
- I recommend creating a folder called database inside your VaM installation folder and using that.

First-time setup / scanning
The first time you launch the Manager (or whenever you add new .var files), you need to scan your files.
I recommend using the default settings for this (or even smaller thumbnails if you prefer).
The first scan can take a long time to complete. Just let it run until it’s done.

Using collections and deploying to VaM
- Create a collection.
- Add files (.vars) to the collection.
- Press “Deploy” to make your current selection active inside VaM.
- Start VaM after you are done in the Manager, so it loads only the deployed selection.
Updating existing manager
To update the Manager and keep your database:
- Unzip the new Manager version to a separate folder.
- Move the folder named database from your old Manager folder into the new one (replace files if asked).
- Start the new Manager to verify that your old setup is present.
- If everything looks correct, you can delete the old Manager version.
