Note: in this guide I am using Unity 2018.1.9f1. I would like to highlight that this version will work with VAM, but you will likely want to download Unity 2018.1.9f2 so that you benefit from any improvements with that version.
Note: to prepare in using this guide, if this is your first time using Unity or creating assetbundles for VAM, you should first run through this guide by MacGruber: https://hub.virtamate.com/resources/unity-assetbundles-for-vam-1-xx.167/.
This guide walks through an example of obtaining a 3D model of a spaceship, creating and editing the materials in Unity, and preparing the model for exporting to VAM. This guide focuses on the process of obtaining 3D mesh objects and goes through more detail into the basic steps of creating the materials for the 3D model, specifically models created in the FBX format. The point is not the complexity of the object, since the object is already created for you by a Sketchfab contributor. The point of this guide is really about material creation. This guide is designed for those with little experience in Unity yet requires that you acquire basic knowledge on how to navigate through Unity and the setup of the display panels. The model chosen for this demonstration includes textures and materials in which we can focus on the basics in a tutorial designed for beginners, and yet also include some examples of the types of challenges that will be encountered in using models acquired by other creators, such as nonstandard labeling of textures.
