Nial has an AWESOME industrial apartment that I've been wanting to use in a scene for a very long time. This is is a customized version of that apartment, built-specifically for an upcoming scene.
I've been envisioning a scene where there would be multiple positions in one of my usual cinematic cam rides, and I wanted it to be in an apartment with interesting locations withing the space. A couple of years ago, I started tinkering with Nial's Industrial Apartment. I tried different furniture, different lighting, and a lot of other in-VaM changes but I could never get it dialed-in quite how I wanted.
I eventually resolved to drag the whole apartment into Unity and really put some effort in. I adjusted the underlying structure first, raising the ceiling and adding tall windows, pillars, new lighting sources, and a modified kitchen area. I added furniture, changed up the textures, and in the end I finally had something that would work for what I was planning.
Once I had this configured in a way that I could use for my project... I got lazy. Well maybe not lazy per se, but definitely busy and since that time back in 2023, I've been moving in and out of interest in this project. I'd pick it up in between other things I was working on, but it was just such a beast to animate, such a pain to make camera movements for, and the subtle tricks with the lighting for such a large space were truly kicking my ass.
As I mentioned in my write-up for She's a Killer, it wasn't until late in 2024 that I picked this project up again and started trying to find inspiration to animate. I don't know about the rest of you, but life has a way of draining not only your time, but your actual motivation to do the projects you want to do. I didn't find that motivation again until I started watching some of my favorite scenes from other creators, and eventually my own scenes that I was the most proud of. I finally hopped back into Unity and turned this into a sort of "artist's apartment" covered with both finished and unfinished wall prints of my scenes over the years.
The rest of the story is really better left for my upcoming scene release, so I'll end it there. I intended to make a version of this apartment that didn't have all of my screenshots in it, and I even tinkered with a way to import your own images into those frames. I ran out of time to do the former, and couldn't fully figure out the latter, so what you see is what you get! It's about 100MB, which I blame one the images in those picture frames and some high resolution textures, but I quite like how the whole thing turned out.
There are a handful of lights that can be turned on and off here (they're all currently turned on) but I didn't do any sort of light switches for that. Maybe in a future version. There are dependencies for some of DragonPhantom's skyboxes, as well as hazmhox's Fluids for the rain. There are actually five rain boxes in this scene, since I really wanted to see shadows from the rain outside, so I had to trick VaM with "black translucent rain" in very narrow bands along the walls and ceiling. I think the effect turned out pretty neat, but ditch it if you hate it!
Hopefully some of you can find a use for this scene, and if I end up with the willpower, I'll eventually try to implement some of those features I mention above. For now, wander around the space and enjoy!
