I'm so sorry if you haven't heard already, but we received word that @MonsterShinkai has unfortunately passed away. (Source: Patreon)

There aren't words for how much he's done for this community, with his kindness, willingness to help, and absolutely gorgeous work. He will be missed.

I'm posting an event banner for the week because I honestly feel it's the least we can do. He deserves so much more. When our Discord found out and there was an outpouring of emotion and love and stories of how he'd helped and influenced so many creators. Feel free to post your own stories below, too. <3

RIP , I have looked to his custom skins more often than not whenever I wanted a particular look of vibe. His were like no other. I did not have personal interaction with him but more than likely every creator here has been impacted by his contribution , whether it was lightrigs , looks , skins or other resources. A great loss.

The times we have spend together laughing and bantering as a channel in your discord was some of the greatest internet moments to me personally and I will never forget it. I still remember you telling everyone if they wanted to summon me in the discord channel all they have to do was type the name or post a gif of a certain Kpop idol and I would appear instantly, Hahahaha.

You were a foodie for sure, our conversations in DM or your discord channel always ends up being about food somehow, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

You were the first creator I ever subbed to after discovering VaM and till date, I am still using your skin for almost 99% of all the saved looks i have. You are one amazing artist, always has been, always will be.

I truly miss you Shinkai and I hope wherever you are right now, you have endless food since you are a foodie and partying with pretty girls just like the ones you have created for VaM.

Ever since I heard of your passing you have been on my mind daily, the news has hit me very hard and has filled my heart with a deep sadness. But this is not about me, it’s about you. You were an absolutely wonderful person in life and I want to celebrate your work and the meaningful connections and moments you shared with me and the rest of the community. Some of you may have already seen this long message elsewhere, so I hope you won’t mind me sharing it here once more. I simply wanted to leave these words here as a small record of how much MonsterShinkai and his work meant to me.

Even now, I still can’t believe MonsterShinkai is really gone...

The screenshots show a few of my favourite characters I customized using MonsterShinkai’s characters, skins, or morphs as their foundation. They are only a small part of how deeply his work shaped my own VaM creations.
When I first got into VaM in the autumn of 2022, my former girlfriend and I were still together. I wanted to make a character based on her, and I used MonsterShinkai’s Ga-In as the base.
After we broke up, I stepped away from VaM for a while and only came back last year. I downloaded Eva, Sophia, and Valentine, and it wasn’t until I became one of MonsterShinkai’s patrons that I realized he had created all of them, along with Ga-In.
A few months ago, I started remaking the character based on my former girlfriend, hoping to hold on to the little details that time was taking away from me. I chose Yerin because I wanted to recreate the girl I loved most using a character made by my favorite VaM creator.

I only spoke with him once, but I’ll never forget it. A few months ago, I messaged him about some missing dependency files and said I’d be happy to pay for them. He was incredibly kind and humble. Even though he said he felt a little embarrassed to share the files because they were so old, he still put together a download folder and sent me the link.It was only a short exchange, but his kindness, generosity, and humility stayed with me. Looking back on it now makes his loss feel even harder to accept.

Only today did I fully realize how many times his work had quietly crossed paths with my life, and how deeply his creations had become part of some of my most private and precious memories.

I don’t think any words could ever fully express how grateful I am to you, or how deeply I will miss you.

I don't think I can aptly describe just how great of a loss this is for our community. Not only was Shinkai an insanely talented artist and creator, he was also an amazing mentor and friend to many. Since his passing, I have seen dozens of people share stories about how Shinkai went out of his way to make them feel special, teach them something valueable, or create something that was personlized just for them. I was surprised to hear how many people had similar experiences, and also not surprised, because... yea, that's exactly the kind of person he was. He loved making people happy, and he did so effortlessly. He was truly inspirational, a giant in the community, in every sense. What an amazing person he was. I consider myself fortunate to have called him my friend. He will be dearly missed.
