How would Y'all do a texture overlay for the limbs? Is there a trick to it? Layering it causes the textures to be in different directions, On top of making sure it seamlessly matches with the body obviously? Using GIMP BTW

I know this is easy to suggest when I have the tools, and they are quite expensive.... Substance Painter.
If you're starting to do serious texture painting, you should drop GIMP. You won't keep your sanity intact with 2D painting.

There are open source or free alternatives you could try. I will give what I remember from the top of my mind, it might be obsolete or outdated, but it will give you a starting point:

- Armor paint
- Quixel Mixer
- Blender
- InstaMat

I'll let you dig and find by yourself, there might be more opensource/free software : )

GIMP's UI can only be described as user hostile...

Haha, well. An "hostile" UI can be learned. But beyond that, 2D painting was something quite possible when 3D models were simple. The more complex you get and especially on organic models, painting in 2D needs you to understand the deformation that occurs on the model or the stretch that can occur on the UV space... good luck with that :p

Hence why painting is definitely the way to go today.
