This is a super cool plugin but it seems to be eating a lot of my fps.. from ~95fps average in an animated scene to ~46fps😢

I'm glad to hear you thinking it's super cool, thank you for the comment ♡

In regards to performance, it is unfortunately real extra work the computer has to do for these cool experiences. If I manage to find opportunities for further optimizations, be sure I'll have them included in next updates. I've only had the chance to spend 3 weeks so far on those features, and with a little more time, it can only get better.

That being said, there are a few ways to manage performance yourself for now:

  • Only keep the features you're actually using turned on. Each one adds cost, so anything you're not using is free performance back. The biggest impacts on performance are Soft Tissue, Contact Dents and Pressure/Fold Marks. The other features are pretty negligible on performance. For an active/heavy scene, I recommend starting off by using only Soft Tissue, Waist Folds, Goosebumps and Vellus (also keep on Rigidity and Tissue Depth as those could potentially improve performance if done right).
  • The biggest lever is the maps. Live Skin only tracks the areas you've painted as movable. If you tighten the soft tissue and rigidity maps to just where you want jiggle and movement (leaving the rest fully rigid or unpainted), it skips everything else and it can make a huge difference on performance. (skipping vertices happens on fully red painted areas on rigidity map and/or empty (no paint) on soft tissue map)
  • Turn on Technical Info in the plugin. It shows a live per feature cost breakdown, so you can see exactly what's eating the frames and ease off that one.
  • If it's two Person atoms interacting, that's the heaviest case by far at the moment. What I mean by it is either having contact dent track whole other Person Atoms, or loading the plugin on multiple Person Atoms and have all kinds of physics features enabled for all.
I will try to improve the painting workflow ASAP to make it easier to paint strictly full or null values. And if it turns out it's pretty time consuming to make your own maps, I'll try to include more Plugin Presets that are performance focused next.
