There is a guide with a lot of information about creating hairstyles (especially the linked video should be a good starting point and easy to follow):

Does VAM have two kinds of hair, vector3 hair and vector4 hair?

It seems that VAM hair can be made by using Autodesk Maya and then converted into VAM hair.
But has anyone done this before?

I don't do hairstyles, so I hope others can jump in and answer your additional questions.
You could also contact some creators who do hair and ask them.

There is no current workflow to take hair created in an external program like Maya or Blender and have it import into vam and use its native hair system. I have seen some creators import hair as a cloth item or as a CUA with a rig. I saw some cool cua hair from @Skynet on the main discord the other day so there may be options for that coming soon!

Miki did a stream on vams hair system that is most enlightening!

true, i think you can only import scalp node maps from DAZ and that's it, you have to style the actual hair yourself from scratch
-the CUA hair i made is based on Unity joints & rigidbodies or the EZsoftbone script, only thing holding it back in that there aren't very good hair shaders out there for Unity 2018.1.
-maybe in Vam 2 with Unity 6 natively is going to support a whole bunch of new hair shaders that we can apply to CUA hair then it would look just as good if not better than Vam native hair + making hair would be so much easier in blender with the non-destructive procedural tools available in it

I've messed with importing scalps from mesh extracts in an attempt to get more uv pixel density since the default ones are very low res due to inefficient uv space usage, you can control the number of nodes with mesh density ;)
