The following tables are sorted results from MacGrubers VAM Benchmark collected here.
Updated - 22.April.2022 -

I try to avoid my opinion or hardware recommendations here - there is already to much 'brand XY is better'-fanboyism on the internet.
It should be clear that one can be happy with 'team-whatever-color' in the comparison tables.

About collected results:

• only official Benchmark Version 3 settings
• only desktop mode, no VR
• only resolutions exactly or very close to 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 or 3840x2160
• systems are only roughly comparable due to different cooling, overclocks, bloated VAM installations, etc., check links, many users post more system details

Why is my CPU not used 100%? (staff quote)

Model physics runs on the CPU, and due to limitations in the Unity version Vam runs on, it's all constrained to a single thread, which causes the bottleneck. You'd need a utility that shows CPU usage by core too see it; one of them is probably pegged at 100%. Your best bet to improve your framerate would be to turn off high quality physics, and disable soft body physics on models/ parts of models that don't need it for the scene you're running.

Hair and sim clothing run on the GPU, so the good news is that you can turn up the quality settings of these without losing any frame rate.

Why compare Baseline 3 physics time?
It seems to be the hardest benchmark for the CPU and is therefore a good indicator for how 'capable' it is for comparisons.
Also the physics calculations are a typical bottleneck in 2-3 character scenes.

*slow = result is known to be slower due to the VAM installation not being clean
*1 = weird exception, with Physics Update Cap = 1 a result of 18.52 was achieved
*2 = read linked Threadripper user remarks and this
*3 = picked fastest B3 phys. result Spoiler#8 Tesselation 8x (2 times less) WITH morphs PRELOAD OFF
*4 = extrem GPU bottlenecked!

Should be helpful for all the people asking if it's worth it upgrading to XYZ.

But to be honest: there should be a category for VR since this is a regular use case and a good overview for everyone what to expect with headset X and system Y u know?

I'm just the wrong guy for VR stuff and doing that would require a lot research for what other VR users already know.

After looking into VR headsets shortly I've decided to ignore it a few more years.
I have no experience with it at all and I do not own VR hardware. Desktop mode only.
The reported VR resolutions in the benchmarks results where always different and sometimes weird.
No clue whether they are native or upscaled. Should the result be discarded because it used bad settings?
Aren't there all kind of headset specific settings/software optimizations too?
I remember reading about variable rate shading for VR performance optimization.
Not sure if that's a driver or game-engine thing.

Originally I only started comparing results to find out what the optimal upgrade for my old Ryzen 3600X was.

You could use/edit post #8 for VR results if you want.
I think there should be standard VR settings defined. Like using the headset native resolution I guess.

The only VR headset I ever tried was this (I believe) in the mid 90s at the computer expo "CeBIT".
They improved the tech a little bit now.

Yeah, using Link or Virtual Desktop you can change the resolution the game is being rendered and sent into the Q2. With the Q2, the game it's not being sent to an external device using HDMI such as the Reverb G2 or any WMR headset; instead, the image is being encoded, sent through Wi-Fi (there is some network latency as well if not using a Wifi 6 or a USB 3.0 cable) and decoded on the headset. There are also a few programs such as Link (which is the official software), Virtual Desktop (a nice piece of software that costs around 20€) and ALVR which is an open source alternative to Virtual Desktop. Each software has some awesome things and others that are not so awesome. I love Virtual Desktop.

Apart from that, the bitrate can be changed as well. I would understand that there are too many variables to create a standarized VR data list.
