Guide to creating tattoos for Vam - Guide to creating tattoos for Vam

Hi Guys,
I have got quite a lot of request to create a guide for how i am creating the wrap around seamless tattoos. I couldnt create a video tutorial, but here is a rough guide on how to do it.

Tools Used
- Gimp
- Photoshop
- Substance Painter 3D

Methodology
Get your tattoos (White background is a real necessity)
Convert the images to PNG
Use substance painter 3d for composite work.

I use Midjourney to create my tattoos. Once I have my tattoos I upscale...

Great job on the guide.
Always takes ages for these things but well worth the sharing of knowledge!

Just a little tip from me...
Rather than dropping skin textures onto the tiles then resizing, you can also add a fill layer and drop them into the 'base color' slot, then click the box indicated to select which udim tile they refer to.
No need to manually size them then :)

Not that it really matters for what you're doing here, but perhaps useful if people decide to take it further.

So ive never used substance painter before for majority of the tattoos i just used photoshop and played the guessing game when it came to the back. However im hitting a brick wall when it comes to exporting it just comes out as black.

First of all, thanks for your guide!
Very well explained step for step even for someone that is not that pratical with SP like me :D

While messing around with the exporting of the textures, I discovered it's possible to do so directly as alpha PNGs.
Without having to do the extra step on GIMP. This might help you with the issue too @Hotlatte .

While exporting use this Output template:

I actually recently came across this. Like i mentioned in the guide i dont know SP that well either. I am learning. I will update the guide with this step. Thanks @Fantana

I happened to have Substance Painter 3D and recently gotten into VaM. I have an idea for a tattoo with a single color (black), so I followed the guide, but it came out oddly warped. I placed it following the guide, the indicator arrows were just touching the skin. It is a genital tattoo. Any help is appreciated.

I think what I have to do is export the specific Look(s) I want the tattoo to fit on to .obj files, but I'm not sure what settings to import them into Surface Painter 3D with. I do wish someone could offer a bit of guidance.

Hey sorry mate, i have been out from vam community for quite a long time. So didnt see your queries. Sometime very stretched and warped tattoos when exported seems all wanky and distored in vam. Try not to enlarge a tattoo too much or wrap a small tattoo all the way around a body part. Hope that helps. Else you can provide the base textures and i can play atound and see if i can make it work.

Welcome back wanderer! Your guide is awesome btw.
I was playing with it, and I wonder if you have ever tried making gens decals?
I am finding the textures come out messed up, like the mesh isn't right? It has kind of a line of distortion:

I fixed this only by changing to different meshes, using these now by Sharr:

Oh Wow!! Glad you found a solution mate. Honestly the mesh that you use affects the final output in minute ways, which sometime drives me crazy. Like small distortion in the final product. But glad that the new mesh is working out for you. I will try with that mesh as well from now on.
