Is it possible to add sound to standard sounds (embedded)? If so, how do I do this?

Load your sounds throught the scene tab "Scene audio". You will find the sound through URL.
It's a UX/UI/Naming convention issue, "embedded" means "vanilla" (integrated to VAM, non modifiable). "URL" means "Custom". There is no need to provide sounds through "embedded" as it would make no difference at all.
