What is VAMStoryVFX

VAMStoryVFX is a complementary library for VAMStory which is focused on VFX (visual effects) including all sorts of things: particle effects, visual effects, light modifiers and so on.

It is not mandatory to use it alongside VAMStory and can simply be a library to improve your scenes visuals.

How to use
First release: Halloween 2024 release (light cookies)

414735-e743743bfe71a861259c4b0867aebbb5.data

This first release only includes light cookies since the rest of the library is still very much at its early stages. Light cookies are a sort of "layer" effect that goes on top of your lights. The first use of light cookies is for spotlights, and allows "flashlights simulation".

This version fixes the previous old versions that were on the hub and had a glitch around the cookies limits. This one prevents that effect and offers a bunch of different cookies for Point, Spot and Directional lights.

To use cookies:
  • Add a light to your scene
  • Select your light and go in the plugin tab
  • Add the plugin vamstory_vfx_lightcookie.cslist to your light
  • Open the plugin and select the cookie you want for your light

Update 2: Animated cookies for spotlights

Info, tips & tricks
  • Animated cookies are only available for spotlights
  • Have fun with the settings, try big or small scales, you will get very different results (as show in the video below)
  • Cookies have a side effect: they can create heavy banding on the darkest areas (which is also true for static cookies), to limit it :
    • Play with the intensity of the light (the lower the intensity the less banding)
    • Play with radius/falloff
    • Play with the "strength" parameter to let a bit more light pass through the cookie
  • A cookie on a pixel light is still a pixel light. Be careful with performances.

Future updates

VAMStoryVFX is the start of a big libraries of visual effects. This initial feature only offers light cookies, but I thought it would be perfect for the incoming Halloween shenanigans.

The next updates will add advanced smoke particles ( fake volumetrics ), revamped heroe powers, fire, lighting, common visual effects and more! Stay tuned.

Special Thanks

Very special thanks to @Spacedog who did the test drive/Q&A of the light cookies... and as usual breaki... I mean, testing the limits of the plugins.
And a huge thanks to @Juno who as usual, brang ideas to improve the plugins and also helped me out figure out the main title shot of the plugin.

Great work! The new animated effects look very good, specially water caustics. Also works with LightOptions so we can limit animated light effect to chosen objects like animated walls, floors etc.

This works so good. In the past I tried putting a PNG in front of lights to imitate a dirty flashlight glass but never was happy with the result. This works perfect out of the box. Thank you. Can't wait to use it soon.
