In simple terms, you load reference images into to the app FaceGen to generate textures (and a morph optionally) that can be applied in VaM. The reference images need to have good angles and lighting, basically the quality of a passport photo. You can use ai image editors like Expression Editor mentioned in one of the guides to get closer to an ideal photo.
An image editor like Photoshop may be needed to cleanup the face texture since parts of the face like eyelashes and shadows from inner nostrils and lips get baked into the texture.
In addition to the textures you'll need to adjust morphs in VaM to achieve closer likeness. The app OnTopReplica that's suggested in one of the guides is very helpful for this. You can use that with the original reference images to compare things while making morph adjustments.
