I understand that this is a simulation and not a game itself. I have gone through the tutorials about how to build scenes.
My questions is how you guys actually play this game. To be blunt, I'm assuming you guys use this to masturbate. How do you do that?
Are there any good mods to make playing this game easier?

What it is and what it isn't is debateable, even the devs call this a game sometimes.
My viewpoint changed over the years, I currently see VAM as a content making platform and for example scenes can be like mini-games made for VAM. While some scenes can be basic mini games, others are more in the interactive movie-like content type, it's that range of possibilities that makes VAM really interesting but challenging.

I remember some things when I was a newcomer, perhaps some tips may help you find your way with VAM, which btw is very dependent on your interests now and how they'll diversify as time passes:
  • Browse through the wiki guides (top menu) targetting newcomers; this will help you give a good basic understanding on how to use common VAM features, like changing looks, playing scenes, download missing dependencies, etc - DO NOT SKIP THIS, it will save you a lot of time and frustration
  • The 2 main resources are looks (appearances) and scenes:
    • A look is a person atom often with hair, clothes, textures, etc; you can load any you have on any scene - mostly - and make all kinds of changes to them by saving an appearance preset (reminder to see the guides)
    • A scene is the mini-game thing that someone made and shared; often features sex animations, possibly some story or theme or music, they can be very different from each other in all kinds of aspects
  • Download some popular and/or well-rated scenes and their dependencies (see guides on this), play around, find themes you like
  • VR will make VAM very interesting, but you don't need a VR headset to enjoy it
  • Tweak things and try to make them more to your own interest
  • Content making to a decent degree will demand a lot of time, effort, and learning, but it can be very rewarding to create what you want to create
Many seasoned creators here started as newcomers making small tweaks here and there, adjusting existing content to match their interest a little better, and step by step the "changes to someone else's stuff" turned into making stuff of their own right. My time using VAM is maybe 1% masturbating with it 😸, making content can be a lot more rewarding, hopefully you'll get there someday too.

Everything atani said is spot on. On the matter of how you get turned on, I'll say it probably helps if animated porn is something you have a preference for already. Familiarity with stuff like SFM videos, Blender animations, Koikatsu, Iwara, adult visual novels, Rule34, etc. likely makes a difference.
