Joint Selection Question

Is there a way to Select all the Parts of an Atom except the control? This is easily done in Blender..
I'd draw a select box around the parts I needed and left the origin point alone. I'm considering the Control like the origin point.
Am I wrong in thinking like this and is there already a plug in that did this?

I'm wondering if this kind of selection could help combine Mo-caps better then if the origin point is always just in one spot and the joints of the Atom just needed to be tweaked into start and ending positions to have seamless transitions between actions.
