Danli will tell you that his first love is the road - the stones, the dirt, the way it takes you to places you’ve never been before. The way it makes him money when you drive a wagon on it.
This is a lie.
Danli’s first love was actually a hardbitten human mercenary named Trina, down on her luck, stuck in the town and barely a week recovered from Stygian Fever. She made the mistake of letting a young, sparse-bearded dwarf split her gash with his hammer in a rented room, then spent the next six months skipping contracts to avoid him as he tried his best for a romantic reunion.
The experience, though painful, did lead him to embrace a life of travel and cunning retail.
After Trina, Danli’s first hire was Vandela, who was even taller, due to the elven blood… she didn’t last too long as his caravan guard, unfortunately. She preferred less hair. Then came Suja, the half-troll… it was like fucking an avalanche: a wild ride, great until the injuries! Then Gott and Ruga, a couple of orc consorts, who slew kobolds in tandem and then let him bounce on them like a toddler on a waterbed. And, of course, the berserker Mozauga, who challenged both his stamina and his sanity.
It’s not a bad life, being a traveling merchant in the Five Kingdoms, but Danli is one of those rare individuals who has found a calling and made it his passion. Nobody said hired guards couldn’t be multi-purpose!
