Hair surface subscene
This is a subscene with 9 capsule atoms to use as a surface for hair collision.
It's a very simple subscene, easy to make, but sometimes these small things are neglected and likely there's many around that would find it useful, so here it is.

What is this for?
If you ever positioned a person on a bed and watched the hair go through it, you know it looks like shit. If you didn't know why it did that it's because hair only collides with some atoms and goes through all others, even with collision set to "on".
These atom types collide with hair:
- Sphere
- Capsule
- Slate
- Possibly some other specialized atoms like floors, etc
Capsules
In most situations you are looking to use a flat surface to collide with hair, and there the Slate atom would seem like the best option of the list above. It starts big but you can reduce the scale to a more suitable one.
Unfortunately the Slate atom can let hair pass through depending on the speed that the hair collides, and this "leak" probably is dependable on the hair used. Comparing with the capsules, these are much more reliable and "leak-proof" than the slate, and in so I would suggest the use of capsules over a slate for reliability.
Tests done after communication that the Slate had different qualities than what I had written earlier. Feel free to also test the slate/capsules methods, compare and discuss the results in the Discussion area. Thank you ?
Capsules in action:
Capsules colliding with hair | Capsules colliding with hair but not with body | Capsules colliding with hair and invisible |
Instructions
Load the subscene in your scene and move it to the place where hair would normally sink through the material (bed for example). The capsules at the end are visible while the others in between are already set invisible (Materials > alpha adjust: -1) and set to "hidden" (atom control). When it's in place you can change the end capsules to invisible and hidden like show above.
You can also detach the capsules from the subscene when you're happy with the position, and remove the subscene atom. Alternatively, you can just uncheck position/rotation grabbing and set it hidden if you still want to make potential changes to the capsules.
Need more than one set of 9 capsules? Easy, load another subscene of HairSurface.
End remarks and credits
The capsules are all set with collision off. This is done to have no collision with atoms, like a person or a bed, but it will still collide with hair.
I don't recall who told me about hair collision, probably was more than one person, so thank you all who share good tips on the Hub and Discord.
