There's a serious problem: when I click Activate Windows Camera, the screen turns to fully black but nothing else, even the VaM menu is hidden. I can't do anything to return back to normal.

This is just in case you did not know. Toggle on 'show camera view in HUD' so you can see what the cam is looking at.
The default rotation is looking at you in a scene and not what you're looking at, so you will have to rotate the camera, or it may be looking out into the darkness. if the scene only has a model and lights. You may just have to rotate the camera.
Try this.
Open a scene that is an environment add a light making sure you can see.
Turn on the window camera and add the plugin hit "M" to toggle the window camera if you're seeing the environment, then you can turn on the letter box and activate the plugin. toggling it via "M" does not activate the letter box bars.
Vam's UI is not visible when using the Window Camera turns off/hides it.
An update is coming where you can have the letter box on screen without viewing through the window camera along with a few extra features if needed.
