Maybe it's my noob-ness (I'm sure it is) but I can't seem to open her once downloaded nor find her in the library even though the .var is in the right place.....?

She is an appearance preset, you have to load her onto a model in a scene from the appearance preset tab on the model and browsing to the var.

Should be similar to this except you will be looking for Mia var:
