I don't think there is a way for the hair to not clip through unfortunatly. And yes, this software is addicting :)
 
There is, you need either a circle or capsule atoms.
I add a few capsules side by side to make a table of sorts where the hair might be in contact. Then material alpha to -1 to hide it.

Good solution thank you it is working but I am struggling to get the hair not to fall in between the capsules and get them in the right place!
 
Overlap the capsules a bit, they don't have to have Collision ON for the hair to collide with them (I think).
I suggest you use the Keybindings plugin with a keybind to duplicate a atom to make a surface with them. Another suggestion is to add them all to a subscene so that you can save and easily add more, as well as positioning in the scene.

Great advice thanks, I'm still learning this, trying now to get collision trigger velocity working with the crop, seems to work with paddle but not crop not sure why
