I'm building a scene where I'm adding many books as atoms individually. Is there a way to "batch" add atoms or a way to quickly copy and paste multiple atoms at once into a scene?

None that I know of.
What I do when I want multiple copies of something is I edit the scene json, copy-pasting the atom, and then in VaM I move them to the right place. Make sure to add different names if you do that.

I do what atani said too. But if you want to do it directly from vam:

You can add a shortcut like ctrl-d to duplicate the selected atom. I had some issues with plugins not duplicating with it or not working if i remember correctly, but possibly i was doing something wrong.

An alternative more peasant way of doing duplicates:
1. save your scene with Book123 atom
2. rename Book123 to Book124 and move it where your want your new copy to be
3. merge load scene the previously saved scene. this way Book123 will be added again and you'll have now both 123 and 124

At 2 you can do multiple renames. Like you have atom1-atom4, you rename them to atom5-8, merge load, and you duplicated 4 atoms at once

But what are you doing with all those books?!

You can also duplicate a bunch of atoms with subscenes.

It's also possible to use them to save different sets of atoms, that you can reuse later on to speed up scene construction.
