PSYCHOLOGY & APPEARANCE: Marla knows no shame and no distance zones – her job requires touch. She radiates an almost intimidating self-confidence. While Linus hides his body, Marla lives in hers. It is direct, demanding and does not tolerate self-pity. For her, the body is a machine that needs maintenance, and she is the chief mechanic.
FUNCTION IN THE NOVELL: It is the "Reality Check". Marla is the one who makes the diagnosis and causes the pain to allow healing. It is attractive, but absolutely unattainable for the current Linus – a visual and physical reminder of how far his road still is.
