Hermes — Make VaM scale with your library
VaM should not become slower simply because your content library gets larger.
Hermes is an independent performance layer for Virt-A-Mate, designed primarily for users with medium to very large libraries.
Instead of allowing VaM to materialize an entire content catalog as Unity objects for every Person, Hermes builds lightweight local indexes and materializes morphs, clothing and hair only when they are actually needed.
Its current areas of focus include:
Hermes is currently in active development and has been designed and tested primarily for VaM Desktop Mode. VR has not yet been formally tested or validated. Experimentation in VR is possible by disabling selected modules or UI features, but VR support is not currently guaranteed.
Hermes does not modify your scenes or content packages. Its present goal is to improve loading, memory usage and library scalability—not to promise a universal increase in rendering FPS.
REQUIRED FIRST - BepInEx 5.4
---------------------------------
Hermes is a set of BepInEx plugins. BepInEx is NOT included in this archive, and Hermes does nothing without it.
Version : BepInEx 5.4.23.5, Windows x64 build (Any recent 5.4.x works. The 6.x branch does NOT)
Already running BepInEx plugins in VaM ? Then you already have it.
To check which version, open BepInEx\LogOutput.log: the first line
reads "BepInEx 5.4.23.5 - VaM".
Installing it, with VaM closed:
1. Unzip BepInEx zip into your VaM folder, the one that
contains VaM.exe. You get winhttp.dll, doorstop_config.ini and BepInEx\.
2. Start VaM once, then close it. That first run is what creates
BepInEx\plugins\ and BepInEx\config\.
3. Check that BepInEx\LogOutput.log now exists. If it does not, BepInEx did
not start - see ABOUT winhttp.dll below.
INSTALL
---------
1. Close VaM.
2. Unzip this archive into your VaM folder, the one containing VaM.exe.
You should end up with:
VaM.exe
vam-storebuilder.exe
hermes-background\
BepInEx\plugins\Hermes-optimization.dll
BepInEx\plugins\Hermes-UI.dll
BepInEx\plugins\Hermes-UI\
3. RUN vam-storebuilder.exe ONCE, from your VaM folder, and let it finish.
This is not optional. It builds the cold indexes Hermes reads at runtime
(morphs, clothing, hair, scenes). Without them Hermes disables itself and
VaM behaves exactly as before. You would see "Run store-builder first" in
BepInEx\LogOutput.log.
It takes a few minutes on a large library. Wait for "DONE".
4. Start VaM.
View README for more details.
Special thanks to the entire Virt-A-Mate community, its content creators and plugin developers, and to MeshedVR for creating VaM and continuing the journey with VaM 2.
Feedback, test results and constructive bug reports are very welcome.

Its current areas of focus include:
- Faster scene loading
- Reduced memory and garbage-collection pressure
- Faster startup and package scanning
- On-demand loading of morphs, clothing and hair
- Optimized thumbnail and image processing
- Improved scene browsing
