Hair editing for hats - How to make any hair fit to any hat

Hello everyone.
This is simple but usefull guide. I will show how to make any hair fit to hats cuz nobody loves when hair go through the hat right?
For this you need a basic knowledge of how to make hair in Vam, or you can just do as me in video.

Here's the video:

1. Choose hairstyle you want to edit.

Question:
Does this process end up creating a new var file with the edited hairstyle that we can put into AddonPackages, or is this adding more loose files into vam's root directory (custom/atom/person/hair etc)?

this will create new hairstyle in custom folder, if you want a var - you need to pack it

when I click "generate" for the scalp mask edit, the hair disappears, a 'clone' of the person appears, and it seems like I'm creating a completely brand new hair. Help?

Yes. I did that. When I clicked "start" (0:24 of your video), the Person atom disappears and another appears, without the hat on their head, and no visible hair. Any edits I make to those points (white/red), when I click "finish", the original atom appears, and the hair at those nodes stands on its end.

I tried extracting the hair from the .var; no luck. I tired changing the atom's starting pose to default, no luck.

I have no idea what's different, but it isn't working as how the video shows, and I cannot think of what to troubleshoot next.
