SOLVED!
Clearing cache in user preferences and running 'Sync/repair all' in VAM_updater.exe solved the problem.

Hi! I was using VAM and didn't realise that I was running out of disk space (I had no prompt or popup). VAM crashed and I couldn't open any sceens until I realised what was causing the problem. Now that I have freed up some space, the sceens load OK, but there is a lot of content missing. Mostly thumbnails for sceens and assets, but also textures. I tried fixing the files from VAM_updater.exe but it didn't help. Do you have any ideas on how to restore the missing content without having to reinstall everything? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You should also clear the cache in User Prefs. That may be what's causing thumbs not to appear. I'm not 100% certain of this, but it's easy to try. You can sort the vars by date in File Manager (not in game). Move or delete the ones from after and just before the crash started.
You could install a clean VaM version in a different folder, then copy your var files from the AddonPackages folder to that new version, but only the ones you know were untouched and working before the problem occurred. Then download all others again.

isn't that going to break links to files? Additionaly it would be nearly impossible to go through all of the files to find the broken ones...

Thank you! I just did that. BTW, I noticed that the cache took up almost 80GB on my hard drive. No wonder I was running out of space! I then chose Sync/Repair all from updater.exe and that seems to solve the problem.

I see you have a solution. (y)

Just in case someone else has a similar problem and reads here I will answer your other post:

With "links" you mean stuff that you made? Scenes, poses and so on? Just copy them also to the new VaM, to the same folder as in the old one and you should be good.
I don't know what you mean with going through all the files. Copy and paste to the new VaM? In the explorer (In Windows, not in VaM) you can sort them by date and then select and copy all from before crash. You can see which ones are left. Download them again.
Or have you downloaded hundreds of vars since the crash? But even then it might be worth a try. :)

I regularly flush the cache when it hits 20 GB. The first time you launch it after that it will be slow to load, then go back to normal.
