Amd vs intel

So im new to this, but i understand that vam is mostly CPU bound, i need help choosing an upgrade. Should i go with a ryzen 5 5600 or intel i5 10600K ,any insight would be appreciated

well, right now it all comes down to price and availability, more then actual performance. it is what it is.

If (big if) you can find any 5600x in stock at respectable price then go for it.
It does cost more but IPC and overall perf. should be better then 10600k, plus you get free cooler (not great, still).

If not in stock and you can't wait, then go for budget intel (they should be in stock).

other lower/all around options would be something like 3600/3600x/3700x, at lower perf. (in VAM)

in the end only you know what u wanna/gonna buy, best todo some research.
look up some reviews, more reviews, more different reviews, get some idea how they perform on different tasks, games ...etc.

get different opinions, so you can get your final verdict.

Just in terms of VaM 1.20, you should be looking for the highest single core performance.

But VaM 2.0 will be along eventually, and single core performance will no longer be the most important thing.

I have bought an AMD Ryzen 5 5800x and it runs very well. Coming from my old i7 4790k it is a somewhat big performance boost in all apps and games and it easiely outruns an 10600k/1700K even in single core speed.... but don't expect wonders in VaM. It is VaM 2.0 that will bring much more performance than any (reasonable) hardware you can buy. It was not such a big jump like porting VaM from HDD to SSD, for instance.

yeah get a Ryzen that way every program like VAM and others who run worse on it or are in development will give you problems now and in the future.

Am curious as to which I should upgrade first too, when I do go and do a load of research I just end up with a headache and a jumbled confusion of numbers and letters in my head XD

I have Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.4GHz and GTX 1080

I'm in a similar boat.

Would be great to know for certain how VAM2 will utilize multiple cores. And what that magic number will be for maximum benefit. Hard to decide on a new CPU/build until then. I'd be gutted if I went with a 6 core Intel build to later discover that VAM2 eats cores for breakfast and 16 cores was a massive improvement.

In all of my year of building computers I have never understood the brand vs brand debates when it comes to components. You first and foremost concern should ALWAYS be cost to performance and how this will affect your workflow. And unless you are building a pure porno machine to be the centerpiece of your masterbatorium, I highly doubt that VaM is going to be the only or even the most used application. And even if this is the case, you gotta think of the long haul, like other are saying, the new versions of VaM will have multi thread support.

Both AMD and Intel have some good offerings when it comes to multi core processors, but we gotta take our whole workflow into account.

Remember brand loyalty and fanboism does nothing but drive hype and prices.

I find that while I use my computer for many things, VaM is the only application that brings it to its knees. So selecting new components based on VaM performance makes sense, as it's the only app where it's likely to make a noticeable difference.

VaM 2 will be bare bones for at least a year nothing worth building into atm, maybe when it comes out I'll consider AMD but while Vam 1 is the big player i will build around it.

IMHO I would update the 1080 GPU first. I did a lot of research, and it is a shame, how small the performance gain in CPU development was during the last decade. When I was young(er), every 1,5 Years the CPU speed gets doubled, now it is only a few one digit percent per generation. Some would say going from a 6700 to a 9700 would give you a HUGE bump... that is a question of your point of view. I would say it is not that much if you look at the FPS difference. Coming from my 7 years old OC 4790k, for me it was a somewhat visible performance bump, but definitely not that much, that it would justify all the money... Most games don't use all CPU cores in an optimal way, many only use up to 4. On the other hand, the GPU development in the last two generations was reasonable huge to maybe justify an upgrade. VR has huge screen resolutions compared to simple HD gaming, so you most likely will run in a GPU bottleneck first.

But to say it again.... if you do it only for VaM, you maybe maybe want to wait till VaM V2 will come out... the old VaM 1.x is very unoptimized, and it still will be if you put it on an all new powerfull PC. It is like a sports car on a wet street with the tires having no grip, or like pressing 1L or 20L water through the same small vent.

And no, I wouldn't do an upgrade purely for VAM, I do play occasional other VR games and desktop games, also do music creation, used to do video editing which I may wanna do again some day etc, so pretty much want an all-rounder.

I had even been toying with getting one of the new consoles, but as I can't get a new console AND PC upgrade I'll probably upgrade PC first, and that first part will probably be one of the newer GTX cards, but I'll wait till normal retailers have them and they aren't all in the hands of scalpers which was my impression the last time I looked

Sadly MSRP on 30 series is going up and stock isnt going to get much better.
