Plugins + Scripts Appearance Preset Extractor
Went ahead and did it. Seems to be successful but your mileage may vary. I did about 37000 presets worth of extraction with no obvious issues in the many I've tested (as many mentioned you have to have the var/dependencies in your addonpackage). I use symlinks too so this is about as enjoyable...- smittypunk

Forgive my python ignorance. I appreciate the caching and multithreading; I'm curious why you changed it from a targeted to global string replacement and opted for copying over the in-place mutation; is that because of the global replacement approach? There may be an obvious answer to this, but I was trying to figure out what someone does who never had the original 1.42 gb var from the mega link but picks up an older var look/scene that used it as a dependent?
