What do i need to create my own models?

What do i need to create my own models?
To keep it short I want to be able to make new/ recreate characters but im not sure what software I need. Ive seen daz, blender, and unity mentioned but do i need anything else? are all 3 of these needed? what resources would i need to get for these to be VAM compatible?
