Hi there,

Maybe you use Virtual Desktop / quest 2 and steamvr for VAM ? Effectively streaming from PC to quest 2 via VD. And steamvr handles vr on the pc.

I use to get 10-20 ms in 90hz but recently I am having a horrid time with 40 plus ms in 72 hz . I wish to work out where the problem lies or if its just some VAM scenes are too much for my pc. As the "ms" seems to drastically change depending on what VAM is doing (im not tech expert). It goes from an idle scene browser 2-5 ms to an insane 60 ms on a recent "look".

vs ms.png

I was wondering if ive changed something and wishing to know what other people get ?

Using win 10 desktop mid range gaming pc.
Quest 2
Virtual desktop
steam vr
VAM
Dedicated 5ghz Asus Router wifi within 1 meter of quest on a wired ethernet to fast broadband.
All drivers updated I believe.

Steam vr settings on default or auto.
VD settings on default or auto.
VAM settings on high usually but i adjust to achieve steady 30 fps in VR.

If anyone can share their settings and tips that be amazing....thanks ;)

I use a quest 2 as well, i use oculus link cable to connect tho, as virtual desktop doesn't seem to find the game for some reason. I can tell you frame rat drops in this game happen constantly. i did find a plugin that helps called "givemefps" from what i understand it gets loaded in the scene plugin section. that seems to help out s bit, however its a temporary thing and you will still see some fps drops even using it. just not quite as bad.

https://hub.virtamate.com/resources/givemefps.1367/ this one ?

I already have it apparently but how do i activate it ?

I can get VD working for you if you want help :-D
I could not stand link due to the cable tether feel and the high ms (always at around 60ms).
What ms are you getting ?
click on your steam vr setting and display performance graph and it will tell you and show you your connection.

After testing VD is far superior but recently im having cable levels of performance haha but it be good to know what cable users as well as VD users are getting ?

Thanks

The givemefps plugin is used as a scene plugin. or at least thats how i am using it. so when your in the scene open edit mode - go to the select menu - select scene plugin (NOT SESSION PLUGIN) - the click add plugin and search for givemefps- once installed open the custom UI menu in the plugin, here you can fiddle with the settings to see how it works for you and your system, i just use the quick button "give me somefps-recommended" and if its just a scene i want to watch and not actually edit or build i use "give me all fps" outside of that i dont know much else. hope this helps

ya the cable is a pain in the ass for sure. i am forever getting tied to my chair with it lol

there is a way to save the plugin so it loads all the time, but i haven't done it yet so i cannot comment on how it works, as for VD i think i sorted it out. i can find vam now, thank you.

On VD, try going to your desktop, open your VaM folder and launch VaM (OpenVR).bat. It should trigger Steam to launch and then load VaM in Steam. This is the best, most reliable way to use VaM with the Quest 2, in my experience.

I have heard several people say the occulus new built streaming system (air link) functions better than Virtual Desktop in alot of scenarios including VAM, maybe see if the beta update is availible to you? It's v28 or v29 on the oculus and the quest itself

I'm using Q2 over Air link. First, you don't need SteamVR or anything else, for running VAM on Q2, after the new update.
First thing to do is to open Oculus app, go to setting>beta and enable air link.
Second thing is to increase the default bitrate from Q2 internal setting but let it remain on Dynamic mode.
The number of devices connected to your wifi does not matter. 5G band is wide enough. I have 4-5 decives constantly connected to 5G band while running air link and no issues.

PS: U need Oculus app installed on your PC and running. You can download that free from Oculus website and you must login to use the app.

Air link is inferior to VD for mid to low end systems or so our test found. Also its more FB control and monitoring and the oculus app is doing a lot of data collection or so I am informed.

After extensive testing in controlled scenes we found Air link to be the best technically overall but is not as stable as VD unless you have a beefy system.

I suspect that air link will get better but still any way to not give full control to fb has to be atleast a consideration when chosing who we trust without our streaming feed...especially when you consider what is on the feed haha

Talking about privacy/data collection in this era is a joke. One should get over it.

lol, I am not sure someone using a VR headset for something like Virtamate is a data point of interest in their analytics. I mean, we don't need analytics to state that a vast majority of headsets are sometimes used for Virtamate or porn

With that said, thanks for the Airlink tip! VD seems to be getting more and more unstable over time with each update.

3 of us did a study on it and we published the data over on the discord.
As far as anything Fb...fuck them and anyway to not support them is ok by me but also Link though technically the best has the most issues as well but VD as you say is shooting itself in the foot. The funny thing was we found apart from stability issues and graphical artifacts and tracking issues and the entire FB issue and which app you use etc. the biggest surprise was that LINK AIR LINK and VD only had a few fps differnce across our tests and Link...the physical cable link was slower than air link haha I had a feeling that would be the base but it makes little sense unless we accept how far the streaming tech has come. Truly amazing.

You get over it ! lol It's a very serious issue which we need to be addressing more and saying no to and pushing hard back against which is actually exactly what is happening on many levels and especailly in Europe. Rather than what ever the fuck it is you're suggesting...? Roll over and take it up the jacksie? Lay down and die? be steamrolled for greed sake?
As that is what happening and just because it is a real problem.... doesn't mean a sane rational moderately intelligent person with integrity has to like or actively support it haha fudge that!
Rather die fighting such absolute bs than live on my knees sucking fb tiny d!ck while amazon r@pes me from behind haha OMG :-O

ps i like your use of the royal "one" your majesty haha ;)

You do, however have to give them something to find. While use of VAM is not particularly interesting, the absence of data is like a flashing bright bouncing ball that says "Here!!!!", "Look Here", "Investigate here!"

GDPR was a good start and the US needs to follow suit. It doesn't go far enough but is light years ahead of any privacy laws the US has.

Agree haha But they eventually wont need something to find...they'll just make it or claim what we like is deviant haha I know VAM has a long way to go to be adopted by the mainstream and despite my tastes being relatively pedestrian i can imagine what my elderly neighbors might thing if I didn't have a password and they accidentally picked up my live stream during their relaxing evening of religious programming HAHA

But my issue is that I believe we should be compensated by billion dollar companies who steal our data or spy on us and create situations which others can take advantage of due to vulnerabilities. Then that third party can use that data against us and then our own governments use that horror as an excuse to curb our civil liberties and hard won rights as they have done time and again. Its all a visioucs cycle where the consumer loses when we should be working in partnership and all benefitting from the excess of wealth...but then literally a few men couldn't be trillionaires.... so that's never going to happen lol

Beyond that dystopia lol... I recommend Virtual desktop every time over FB while air link is in beta but I will reaccess in 6 months where I suspect Airlink will have ironed out the gltiches or what we consider the base pc will be that much more powerful making the current AL short comings redundant 🙃

Man, you are so naive that I don't even want to waste my efforts and energy, trying to tell you about how Data is used these days. I don't want to undermine my degree in Data mining.
God if you have ever read about anything slightly related to what actually data is, then you have not written all these salty things over here.
And BTW, as per you, only big techs like FB, Google, etc are so-called "STEALING" your data and you can "fight" them, then first stop using their services entirely and then talk about "fighting back".
And I wanna see you "fighting back" for your data from the "not so open" countries whose entire existence is stealing things from others.

At last, I posted the comment just to help you out about the issue you were having but not everyone is generous to others, some just want to degrade other ppl coz they like to do that. You not gonna change just reading my comment so be it.

Thank you for your perspective. I'm not degrading others LOL. That is you again projecting and far frrom helping or contributing to a discussion about the actual topic or the issues related to it.

I am saying I don't agree with your attitude of 'when things are broken except them and just let things get worse'. I do not agree with that and I think that attitude if that is your attitude is horrific imo.
I am not saying you are a bad person or you smell haha
I am saying that attitude is a real problem and the best and brightest are fighting hard every time to prevent that bs from becoming the norm across the board.
And I am saying that such an attitude is detrimental to VAM and VR and everything in between. We shoud not simply accept anti consumer behavior because it has become the status quo.

I am not naive. you are being rude :(
I am fully aware of the problems we face but unlike you I have chosen to not allow these monsters to be acceptable or actively supported. I do not agree with many things which are the norm now but it doesn't mean i go along with them. And if fighting an almost unwinnable war is naive ...then maybe i am haha and happy to be naive as its better than the awful alternative!
And every civil liberty you ..we all enjoy in the WEST is a direct result of people with your stated attitude saying 'youre naive and there is no point fighting' and people with my attitude 'saying ill prove you wrong' and then proving you wrong haha

Im sorry if you disagree and im sorry if you feel i am personally attacking you when i attack corporate greed or unchecked wealth or spying on customers without permission or the loss of consumer rights or the gulf between rich and poor in 2021... and if you actively support that shit show then YES I AM ATTACKING your view on those issues.
But please dont take it personally unless your core identity is defined by rolling over and taking it from the man haha
I dont believe you even have anything in common with the trillionaire tech giants so attacking their antics is hardly personal to you.
But I respect your right to disagree...Good for you! But seriously stop being so naive ;).

" Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. "

Now if you have a view on Which is best Air link or Link or VD then please share it as we are going off topic :-D

The way you "haha"ing every paragraph tells me not to get in an argument with a Kid, with a keyboard and lots of free time. You don't even know what you are even typing or your words even making sense at all. I will highly suggest you concentrate on studies and understand the topics like "Data mining, Big data, Modern security principles" etc then come again read your comments that they have even a little bit of sense or not.
Rest, enjoy! Not gonna waste any more of my breath for a person who just enjoys getting in arguments with people, just to prove they are superior coz in the real world, things are different for them.

I think the ship has sailed with regards to data privacy. It will take a pretty big catalyst to change things now. First rule of change: Create a sense of urgency. That has not been triggered yet. Once that momentum starts I am on board with any legislation limiting personalized data collection.

On topic: I tried Air Link. I don't think I will use it unless there is a way to turn off screen mirroring. I don't see an option in the Oculus app and it is turned off in VAM. It is unfortunate as it seems to be faster, a few more FPS, and much easier and cleaner than VD+Sidequest. I have not tested the security though I imagine it is pretty loose as well.

Im laughing at the situation to prevent madness haha as it is a very sad situation but again your flawed debate is to insult people? Really?
Please do waste your breath (breath with a words and a keyboard wtf!?) as it is important to hear how some people 'think' so others can rise up to counter it.

Your comments need to be countered as they are part of the very 'rot' which we all face every day and makes all of our lives smaller. And if I am a child then that makes your counter even worse...even more humiliating haha ... a small child who countered what I presume is a grown adult ...and exposed your comments as trolling haha how embarrassing lol

You have contributed nothing to this post so please move along or stay ...and stop wasting " breath" and start actually joining the actual debate!...and pllllllsss stop taking it all so personal .
Life is too short for what ever it is you're trying to achieve by insulting people and arguing for the sake of it :-D

ps 'life is for laughing' so haha and lol and lmao

On topic haha I also noticed that and agree. We tried them all extensively and created a VAM control test for all software and overall we found VD to be the best especially on mid range pcs. But to be fair AirLink is in beta. But I genuinely worry about how much the oculus store app you need to run it interferes with the actual streaming. This is less of an issue with VD and steam vr seems to have less impact on the overall eexperiences and ofcourse VD and steam vr to gether offer many more options and fine tuning to get the best results no matter your pc :-D

Sorry, I am a VR newbie, can Virtual Desktop be used completely without oculus link pc software, or would I still have to install oculus software on PC?
